High-Torque BLDC Motor

The new drive technology of this high-torque BLDC motor makes it true: Very high efficiency by small dimensions and weight, an extremely steady, smooth and quiet running during long lifetime. This patented motor technology combines all advantages of classic DC motors with fully electronic commutation. The integrated electronic controller with encoder ensures a wide range of applications with low implementation effort.

This brushless motor operates on a patented axial flow double disc rotor principle with continuous commutation. The fully integrated electronics, which is matched to the motor characteristics, takes over the motion control. The motor achieves the exceptionally high torque density of 0.5 Nm with high overload capacity and adjustment dynamics. A specially developed air anchor principle is used instead of the usual slot anchor. This ensures perfect cogging torque, excellent running smoothness, and fast, accurate fine positioning.

Small and compact, also stands for a stable and durable motor type. Due to the design of the high-torque BLDC motor, it has a high mechanical rigidity and no problems in the heat dissipation of the winding. This design deliberately avoids self-supporting windings and components that cause instability or tendency to oscillate. All elements are stably connected to the motor housing or the motor shaft.

Ready for operation without additional electronics

In addition to the commutation, the fully integrated control electronics master many control tasks for standard applications and optionally communication via various bus systems (motion controllers). In many cases, additional and dedicated control electronics are not required anymore.

Continuous operation

If the high-torque BLDC motor is supplied with voltage, it runs like a usual DC motor in continuous operation.

Control signal

Control inputs can be used to specify various parameters such as speed, torque, direction, etc.

Data bus

For demanding motion sequences, the high-torque BLDC motor communicates with a higher-level control unit via a standard data interface (data bus).

 

Technology with outstanding power

In addition to the electronic commutator, which is controlled by a programmable logic (CPLD), in the motor, a microcontroller is integrated, which in the normal version takes over the directional control, the PWM speed control with ramp functions for acceleration and deceleration as well as various protection functions and fault analyzes. An incremental encoder with pulse counter is also included, which can be used to control the speed and the position in multiturn mode. By modifying the firmware, it would thus be possible, for example, to control an oscillating motion, as used in the windshield wiper drive, even over many engine revolutions (transmission input), despite the large gear reduction.

Thus, a single additional position encoder on the output - meaningful with switching point in the middle of movement - would be sufficient to detect the absolute position at power-up (or during initialization) and then perform a sine-like motion control in the reversal points. In addition to this smart motion sequence, the wear of all moving parts and current peaks is reduced. In this case, the additional position sensor can be directly connected to an input line of the integrated motor electronics, so that in addition to a start-stop line no further external controls are needed. We will gladly check further special function on request.

The high-torque BLDC motor is available as a motor without gearbox. We also supply it combined with a planetary gear as well as with a spur gear unit. Further components can optionally be configured with regard to the specific application.

For all our geared motors we can provide CAD data and motor characteristics. The entire characteristic curve of the high-torque BLDC motor shown here can be used for a short time. Due to the development of heat at 25° C ambient temperature, the continuous torque must be limited to the limit shown at 0.31 Nm. For torques above 0.5 Nm, a current limit becomes effective.

  • What is a BLDC motor?

    A BLDC motor is a so-called brushless DC motor. This is a design for electric motors in which the commutation takes place electronically. Therefore, no sliding contacts are required (also called carbon or brushes).

  • How does a BLDC motor work?

    In the case of brushed DC motors, the mechanical carbon brushes deliver the current through the commutator into the coils on the rotor. Carbon brushes can be thought of as mechanical switches that allow current to flow through the appropriate windings via sliding contacts on the rotor and control generated magnetic fields so that the armature rotates in the desired direction.

    As the name suggests, a brushless DC motor does not use brushes. How is then current transferred to the rotor coils in a brushless DC motor? A BLDC motor does not need this transmission because the coils are not attached to the rotor, but here the rotor is a permanent magnet. The coils do not turn since they are attached to the stator, the motor pot. So because the coils do not move, no brushes and no commutator are required. Instead, a controller is required that uses sensors to determine the position of the rotor and does the commutation, i.e. the correct winding always flows through with current.

  • What is the difference between the high-torque BLDC motor and other DC motors?

    Conventional DC motors have significant advantages over other motor types, such as high starting torque, high torque density, and linear torque characteristics. However, the disadvantages are the brushes. The usual brushless DC motors (BLDC, EC) circumvent this disadvantage, but are in fact not DC, but electronically controlled asynchronous motor, and do not have these comparably advantageous properties.
    This high-torque BLDC motor now represents a new, patented alternative. In its basic machine and winding design, it perfectly matches the operating principle and all mechanical-electrical properties of traditional DC motors, but it is full-electronically commutated. Thus, the high-torque BLDC motor with its power output exceeds the previously known DC motor by far.

  • Where is the high-torque BLDC motor produced?

    This motor is exclusively made in Germany.

  • What are the delivery times for the High-Torque BLDC motor?

    JBW maintain their own large storage in Munich so that motors are available quickly. For framework contracts with agreed quantities and delivery times, we even grant given delivery times.

  • Can I get a high-torque BLDC motor for prototyping issues?

  • Is there a suitable controller for the BLDC motor?

  • Can a 24 V BLDC motor be operated with higher voltages?

    A BLDC motor, which is designed for 24V, can be damaged at higher voltages. Slight increases of 2 to 3 volts are conceivable, but should be tested in a specific application.
